Kent CT Attractions & Links
Visiting Northwestern Connecticut
The northwestern hills of Connecticut were once the lands of
the Indians. Route 7 was once their path to walk along the
beautiful Housatonic River.
Eventually that path became a towpath for early settlers,
farmers, travelers and their cows, horses and assorted other
animals.
Later on, during the Industrial Age, iron ore mining and
smelting in towering furnaces built from native stone drew locals
and strangers alike along Route 7 and the river to work.
Today's visitors are hard-pressed to believe that not a tree was
to be seen in these hills toward the end of the Civil War; every
tree and stick available fueled the furnaces that armed the
Yankees.
Today, Route 7 and the Housatonic River take you to the
Appalachian Trail, Lime Rock Raceway, Tanglewood and the historic
summer homes and gardens of the wealthy in Lenox and Lee,
Massachusetts to tour.
Canoe, fly-fish or kayak the Housatonic River or walk its banks and
trails.
Visit local farm stands and farmers' markets for their
fabulous, fresh produce. Meander along Kent's Main Street,
only steps away from Starbuck Inn. Enjoy the used-book
sale at the Library, shopping for gifts you won't see anywhere
else, and strolling from bakery to chocolate shop to tea house.
Have lunch at the bakery, handmade chocolate truffles at the
chocolate shop, and finish with champagne and salmon at the tea
shop, all within steps of each other. Eat outdoors and watch
the world go by.
Fall foliage viewing is unsurpassed in the northwest hills.
In season, ski cross-country throughout our State Parks or
downhill and snowboard at Mohawk Mountain Ski Area in Cornwall.
Three of the finest private schools, Kent, South Kent, and
Marvelwood, are right here. Parents from all over the world
